Monday morning brought a moment of historic significance in the ongoing Anfield redevelopment plans as the oldest remaining part of the ground – the wall behind the Main Stand – was demolished.

Earlier this month it was confirmed that expansion would take place on that side of the world-famous stadium, with construction to add around 8,500 more seats and increase overall capacity to around 54,000.

The Main Stand development, which is scheduled to be completed during the 2016-17 season, took its first steps last Monday, December 8, when construction firm Carillion started their first day on site.

Work continued yesterday with a poignant procedure that removed the wall backing onto the car park in that area, which dates back to the 1880s and was in place before Liverpool even took residence at Anfield.

Our cameras captured the scene as it happened and the club's museum curator, Stephen Done, was on hand to provide a detailed explanation of its symbolic importance in the free video embedded below.
