Nearly 30 years before he was appointed manager of Liverpool in 1998, Gerard Houllier worked in the city as a teaching assistant.

It was then, rather than during his trophy-laden time with the Reds, that his love affair with Anfield began.

"I used to stand on the Kop when I was here in 1969. The atmosphere and passion on the pitch as well as the terraces was intoxicating and Liverpool became part of me from that day on."
