50 Men Who Made LFC: Emlyn Hughes
With his heart on his sleeve and a beaming smile on his face, Emlyn ‘Crazy Horse’ Hughes played the game how it should be played and remains an iconic figure of a glorious era.
Those lucky enough to see have seen him in action will recall his boundless enthusiasm, never-say-die commitment to the cause and unrelenting passion for the club.
Signed as a virtual unknown from Blackpool in 1967, his energetic performances quickly endeared him to the fans on the Kop as Bill Shankly’s second great team took shape in the early 70s.
A born winner, he could be relied upon to run through brick walls for the Liverpool cause and was a natural choice to eventually captain the club, which he did so with distinction as the Reds lifted a succession of trophies.
Hughes clinched the biggest prize of all when Liverpool won the European Cup in Rome 1977, and repeated the feat 12 months later at Wembley.
