50 Men Who Made LFC: Ian St John
A key figure in the transformation of Liverpool Football Club from a mediocre Second Division outfit to one of the most feared sides in Europe in the 1960s.
The signing of Ian St John stoked the Anfield embers that had been on the back burner for the preceding decade.
His goals in the heady years that followed were instrumental in the Reds exploding into the consciousness of football fans at home and abroad, and in the process of scoring them he became a Kop legend.
It took a then-club record fee to prise him from his local club, Motherwell, in May 1961 but there have been few better investments.
A feisty Scotland international, his infectious passion rubbed off on those around him and, within a year of his arrival, a much-coveted top-flight return was secured.
Two First Division title triumphs followed but the crowning moment of his Liverpool career was, without doubt, the headed Wembley goal that broke the club’s 73-year wait for FA Cup glory in 1965.
