50 Men Who Made LFC: Matt McQueen
The most versatile player in Liverpool history, Matt McQueen not only fulfilled every possible position on the pitch, he also served as a director and manager during a long association with the club that stretched back to its earliest days.
Signed during the club’s first season in existence, he quickly established himself as a fans’ favourite.
A priceless utility man, he was capable of playing all over the pitch and even enjoyed a lengthy spell as a goalkeeper during the Second Division title-winning campaign of 1895-96.
That was the second time he had helped Liverpool clinch promotion but first-team opportunities became limited thereafter and he soon retired from playing to become a qualified referee.
McQueen returned to Anfield in 1919 to join the board of directors and then stepped into the managerial breach when Dave Ashworth suddenly resigned in 1923.
He subsequently steered the team to a successful defence of the league championship and continued at the helm for a further five years, despite losing a leg in a car accident.
