50 Men Who Made LFC: Billy Liddell
The mere mention of the name is enough to send ageing Liverpudlians into dewy-eyed reminiscences of a player who will forever be classed among the greatest to pull on the famous red shirt.
Such was Billy Liddell’s influence on the team throughout his 23 years at Anfield, supporters of the time went as far as renaming the club ‘Liddellpool’ in his honour.
A First Division title winner in 1947 and an FA Cup finalist three years later, Liddell was a crowd favourite from the day he made his debut.
A thrilling, skilful, two-footed winger, he was fast, direct and capable of bursting the back of the opposition net with one of his trademark thunderbolt shots.
Loyal to the core and an exemplary role model, when Liverpool’s on-field fortunes dipped in the 50s it was thanks to Liddell that crowds continued to flock to Anfield in their thousands.
His sublime talent was largely responsible for saving the club from Football League oblivion prior to the arrival of Bill Shankly.
