Adam Phillips netted a fantastic free-kick and captain Trent Alexander-Arnold scored twice as Liverpool U18s produced a brilliant performance to beat Newcastle United 4-1 on Saturday morning.

Neil Critchley’s side were full value for their victory and substitute Kris Owens was also on the mark.

Phillips fired the U18s in front with an unstoppable free-kick and Alexander-Arnold made it 2-0 when the Newcastle goalkeeper failed to keep out the effort.

The away side pulled a goal back just before half-time, but Alexander-Arnold fired again and Owens made certain of the victory.

Reflecting on the game, Critchley told Liverpoolfc.com: “We played really well and I was delighted with the boys.

“We played some great football and we could have scored a lot more goals. We hit the bar a couple of times and missed some great chances.

“Adam scored a fantastic goal direct from a free-kick and it was nice to see Trent get a couple because he is capable of scoring goals from midfield.”

Liverpool U18s: George, Lewis, Johnston, Whelan, Masterson, Coyle (Parker 70) Alexander-Arnold, Phillips, Woodburn, Paulo Alves, Brimmer (Owens 60).
