Adam Phillips and Will Marsh were on the mark as Liverpool U21s beat Sligo Rovers 2-1 in a friendly encounter at the Showgrounds Stadium on Wednesday night.

Michael Beale’s side bounced back from Sunday’s Anfield defeat by Manchester City in style as they delighted the Irish Reds in the ground.

After netting the dramatic stoppage time winner at the City Ground in the FA Youth Cup last week, Phillips fired the young Reds into a 32nd minute lead.

On 58 minutes Sam Hart went close to making it 2-0 with an effort that was brilliantly saved, before two minutes later the home side levelled from the spot after Joe Maguire was penalised for handball.

Jimmy Keohane confidently fired the penalty beyond the reach of Andy Firth to make it 1-1.

Substitute Marsh then netted the winner when he scored in the 69th minute to pounce from close range, just two minutes after entering the field.

In another boost for Beale, he welcomed back Ryan McLaughlin after injury with the Northern Ireland international making a second-half entrance.
