Cutting in from the right flank, Alexander-Arnold showed wonderful skill to beat three defenders and find the net.
However, a set piece was to prove decisive, as Matty Platt headed home the late winner.
Critchley's side played well on the day but found Blackburn goalkeeper Andrew Fisher unbeatable at times.
