Liverpool FC's Academy has been awarded category one status under the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP).

The EPPP is a Premier League initiative with the aim of revitalising youth football by developing areas such as coaching, education, welfare, medical care and providing greater opportunities for young players to progress.

All Premier League academies are independently audited and given category status of one to four, with one being most elite.

Based in Kirkby, the Reds’ Academy was created in 1998 and trains players from U9 level through to the U21 squad.

Alex Inglethorpe, Academy director, said: “We are all delighted to retain our category one status.

“A great deal of work goes on behind the scenes to ensure we can provide the best environment and experience possible for our young players.”

A host of local players have progressed through the Academy to the first team – including Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen.

More recently, season after season young players continue to graduate from the Academy to Melwood and experience first-team football at Anfield.
