Phil Thompson celebrates Paris anniversary at LFC Academy
Phil Thompson paid a visit to the LFC Academy in his hometown of Kirkby to meet young Reds taking part in the club’s International Academy Soccer School.
The visit coincided with the 35th anniversary of the 1981 European Cup final that saw Thompson captain Liverpool to a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in Paris.
To mark the milestone, the former skipper brought the iconic trophy to the Academy, allowing the youngsters a glimpse of the world-famous silverware.
Thompson discussed his experiences with each of the participants, giving them the opportunity to question him on his successes as both a player and later as a coach for his beloved LFC.
Talking about the International Academy Soccer Schools, Thompson said: “The first thing has to be enjoyment. As much as you can help them with dribbling techniques or passing techniques, they have to enjoy what they’re doing.
“These guys have to make it interesting - they are young kids just starting out. They just want to play match time, but it has to be more than that and I’ve noticed with the guys doing the coaching that it is all about that here.”
Throughout the five-day courses at the LFC Academy, attendees learn to play the Liverpool Way through fun and inclusive sessions, small-sided games and Academy skills challenges.
All players also get the opportunity to record their experiences in their Individual Learning Plan before taking away feedback from their coach at the end of the week.
