Harry Wilson netted twice as Liverpool U23s produced a superb performance to beat Odense 2-1 in Denmark on Wednesday evening.

Michael Beale's side were playing against a senior team who were previously unbeaten in the Danish Superliga this season.

Odense were physically strong and the young Reds defended well, while at the other end of the field Wilson, Brooks Lennon and Ben Woodburn were full of energy all evening and were the instigators of both goals and a number of good opportunities.

The opener came from the penalty spot after Woodburn set off on a fantastic run and was brought down. Wilson expertly converted from 12 yards.

Next was a brilliant team move. A fine pass by Woodburn sent Lennon racing away and his pull-back was finished by Wilson from inside the six-yard box to register his and Liverpool's second goal of the night.

Odense pulled a goal back with a brilliant effort to set up a frantic last 15 minutes.

Beale's charges could have scored more, as Portugal youngster Rafael Camacho went close and Wilson wasn't far off getting what would have been a deserved hat-trick.

Odense threatened an equaliser but were denied by Caoimhin Kelleher, who made a stunning stop.

Reflecting on the victory, Beale told Liverpoolfc.com: "It was an excellent performance against Odense's first team.

"They are unbeaten this season in the Danish Superliga and therefore this is a nice win and a confidence boost for the players after a disappointing game at the weekend against Southampton.

"Overall, it has been a fantastic trip and I would like to again thank Hans Moller and his organisation for inviting us to Denmark for the third year running.

"The staff at the hotel and hospitality has been first-class and a crowd of nearly 3,000 young Liverpool fans were in attendance. This was a fantastic experience for our young players."

Liverpool U23s: Kelleher, Whelan, Juanma (Garton 80), N Phillips, Maguire (Lewis 70), Virtue, Wilson, Williams (A Phillips 60), Lennon, Hart, Woodburn (Camacho 70).
