After making a fantastic start to the new academic year, students from the LFC Foundation College were recently rewarded with a trip to Melwood to meet Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

The Reds’ No.22 gave an inspiring talk to a group of 14 on the importance of education for footballers, explaining how as a young professional he drove to university after training to gain his degree.

Mignolet believed the qualification would provide him with more career options when he eventually retires from football.

The students, aged 16-18, are based at the Reducate classroom at Anfield and University of Liverpool Wyncote Sport Ground, where they work towards qualifications that will enable them to gain university places in the United Kingdom and USA.

In the past two years alone, 21 students have achieved that goal, undertaking degrees such as Football and Science, Football Coaching, Community Development and Physical Education Teaching Training.

Former student Joe Brooks, who is now studying to become a PE teacher at Liverpool Hope University, said: “After leaving school I was not sure what to do and the LFC Foundation College gave me the support and guidance to get to where I am today.

“I got the chance to have the best two weeks of my life in the Dallas Cup (Texas, USA) and the whole package inspired me. The staff are brilliant and I cannot thank them enough.”

Callum Hanlon, who joined the college after being involved in the LFC Foundation Premier League Kicks Programme, said: “I am loving every minute of the LFC Foundation College.

“I want to play as high a level as I can in football and hope to achieve this through the college. If I can’t make it as a footballer then I would love to study Football and Science at Liverpool John Moores University.

“It’s great to hear that Simon [Mignolet] has a degree and really inspires me to follow in his footsteps.”
