Steven Gerrard does not expect his debut for the Liverpool FC Legends in Sydney on Thursday to be the final time he appears in the red shirt.

The former Anfield captain will skipper an impressive squad of former stars managed by Gerard Houllier for a meeting with the Australian Legends at the ANZ Stadium.

It will be the talismanic midfielder’s first appearance in the colours of his old club since he made the switch to LA Galaxy in America last summer.

But Gerrard, who also expressed his anticipation for playing under Houllier again, hopes there are more such events to be involved with in the future.

“Hopefully, there’ll be many more of these occasions,” he said at a pre-match press conference in the city.

“It’s great to be part of an occasion like this, almost like a reunion of players we played with and heroes of mine that I grew up watching.

“Also, to play for Gerard again is a special occasion for all of us. Hopefully, there’ll be many more in the pipeline when I come back from America.”

The 35-year-old visited Australia with Liverpool during the pre-season tour of 2013 and experienced the unforgettable rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ at Melbourne Cricket Ground as he stood on the pitch.

He added: “It was an amazing occasion, close to 100,000 supporters here, which goes to show the fanbase we’ve got in Australia.

“There’s going to be a big crowd tomorrow as well and we’re all looking forward to it. Hopefully, it will be a similar show because we certainly enjoyed that one.”

Watch the Legends match at 8.30am GMT (7.30pm local time) live on LFCTV and LFCTV GO.
