Gomez surprises teams at LFC Foundation tournament
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez made a surprise visit to a special Liverpool FC Foundation football tournament on Wednesday at the club's Academy in Kirkby.
The event is part of the Premier League Schools Tournament programme, which is an initiative to engage schools in a competitive environment.
After the final game in the tournament, Gomez joined youngsters for the award ceremony, where he presented medals and a trophy to the winning team – Prescot Primary School – who claimed victory over Park Brow Primary School with a 3-1 result.
As part of the prize for winning the competition, children from Prescot Primary will receive bespoke training sessions hosted by the LFC Foundation and a special assembly delivered by the club’s official mascot, Mighty Red, ahead of their national final held at Goodison Park later this year.
Gomez said: “It is fantastic that the LFC Foundation delivers events like these in the local community. It is brilliant to see young children from across the county come together and enjoy playing football at the LFC Academy.”
Andrea Cooper, head of the LFC Foundation, added: “It is important that young children can play sport in a competitive environment.
“In addition to football, our tournament programme allows young people to develop teamwork and communication skills which are essential everyday skills.
“It is great to see all the teams taking part. Prescot Primary School really deserved to win and we are pleased to have them represent the Liverpool FC Foundation at the national final this year.”
