Pure Liverpool for 94 years - watch Charlie's story
Liverpool could only have dreamed of reaching the heights ahead of them when Charlie Gallagher became a regular match-goer back in the 1950s.
The season ticket holder, now approaching his 95th birthday, began passing through the turnstiles at Anfield in the era of Billy Liddell, several years before even a certain Bill Shankly pitched up and started a Reds revolution.
Charlie watched on from the terraces as the incomparable Scot constructed a team capable of hauling his club out of the Second Division and also-ran status to the top flight, league championship glory and an historic first FA Cup.
European nights under the floodlights, Shankly’s second great team, the handing of the baton to Bob Paisley, the Boot Room, the genius of Kenny Dalglish, dominance at home and abroad, highs and lows, the modern game in the Premier League.
Charlie has seen it all.
And the long-serving fan continues to witness history unfold, attending every home match of his beloved Liverpool. “They’ve had their ups and downs, but you’ve still got to support the team,” he says.
Who better, then, to receive an unexpected visit from a legendary figure of the Reds’ past, a leading light in the side that built the foundations for the years of success Charlie cheered on from the stands?
A knock on the door revealed Ian St John on the step, with a gift in hand – a brand new 2017-18 home shirt in recognition of his ongoing and dedicated support.
This is Charlie’s story…
