Four to face trial over Hillsborough charges
It has been ruled that David Duckenfield, South Yorkshire Police’s match commander on the day of the Hillsborough disaster, will face trial over charges of manslaughter by gross negligence of 95 Liverpool supporters.
Sir Peter Openshaw made the decision to lift a stay on Duckenfield’s prosecution at Preston Crown Court on Friday.
Graham Mackrell, former club secretary of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, is to face two charges for alleged breaches of safety legislation, while Donald Denton and Alan Foster, then of the South Yorkshire Police, and the force’s then-solicitor Peter Metcalf will go to trial charged with perverting the course of justice.
