Stewart Downing admits Liverpool's players get a thrill out of entertaining the fans.

The Reds' promising start to the 2011-12 season has been characterised by a stylish attacking verve which has enabled them to plunder 15 goals so far in all competitions.

Downing insists those on the pitch get as much enjoyment out of playing in that manner as those in the stands.

"It's good to see the fans are enjoying watching the team play and the way we're trying to play," he told LFC Magazine. "We're trying our best for them because they deserve it.

"I think fans watch football to be entertained. They want to see goals and forward players attacking. It's nice when you can do that.

"Some managers obviously don't want a game to be too open, but from a fans' point of view, players are there to entertain and do well.

"I think, particularly at home, we have done that this season. Our football has been good and long may it continue."

He added: "We have been creating chances. I think there will be a day soon when we put all of them away and we'll have a big win against somebody."

Having tallied 13 points thus far this season, Liverpool currently occupy fifth place in the league table.

"It's been a decent start to the season. But it's still early yet," said Downing.

"We know it's not about doing it over six or seven games, it's about doing it for the whole season. If we all continue to work hard, there's no reason why we can't be successful."

Downing has started all seven of Liverpool's Barclays Premier League matches this season and has operated in a range of positions, including both left and right wing.

The 27-year-old, however, has no qualms about where he plays.

"I played on the right a lot for Villa," said Downing. "Most of my career there was spent in that position. I enjoyed it. I'm not fussed if Kenny wants to put me on either wing. The main thing for me is to be in the side and playing well."
