Dirk Kuyt's late winner against Manchester United will give him the confidence to start firing again for Liverpool.

That's the view of Reds legend John Aldridge, who knows all about leading the attacking line at Anfield.

The Dutchman's half-volley on 88 minutes was his first of the season but it could rank alongside the most crucial he has netted since his arrival from Feyenoord six years ago.

Kuyt will be in search of his 50th league goal against Wolves tonight and Aldo is adamant Liverpool's No.18 will be spurred on by his FA Cup strike.

"It was a great moment for Dirk Kuyt to grab the winner against Manchester United. Four months is a long time to go without scoring and that will be a huge weight off his mind," wrote Aldridge in his Liverpool Echo column.

"No matter what any striker says, not scoring gets you down. It drains your confidence and Kuyt has had a tough season so far.

"But he always works so hard and got his reward when he anticipated Andy Carroll's flick-on and stuck the chance away brilliantly."

Many fans see Aldo himself as one of the most instinctive goalscorers ever to pull on the Red shirt.

Statistically, he's one of the most prolific, netting at a ratio of more than one goal every two games.

Aldridge struck only once against Manchester United during his two-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield and that came during a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in November 1987.

Kuyt's winner on Saturday afternoon was his fourth goal against our rivals from down the East Lancs Road.

However, in typical fashion, Aldo was quick to remind readers that while he may not have been red-hot against United, he was unstoppable against other giants of world football.

"Kuyt got a hat-trick against United last season and it's funny how strikers have good records against certain clubs. Mine was against Barcelona - I got eight in six games against them!"
