Sixteen boxing newcomers are set to come together to raise money for disadvantaged children through Steven Gerrard's foundation.

The participants, including potato merchants, entrepreneurs, mechanics and office workers, will step into the ring in aid of the Steven Gerrard Foundation on April 6.

First the amateurs will endure a 10-week training regime.

Gerrard told the ECHO: "I am really excited about the boxing event.

"It is great that local people and businesses are getting behind the charity and helping make a difference."

Set up in February last year, the Steven Gerrard Foundation aims to support projects which help disadvantaged children.

The 31-year-old added: "The money raised will help give thousands of disadvantaged children a brighter future.

"The first grants cycle has just closed and we are looking forward to announcing our chosen charities in the next six weeks.

"We have already helped Zoe's Place, Claire House Hospice and Fairbridge and are really looking forward to helping out some others.

"Every day we are working to make a lasting difference to children's lives.

"I have lived in the city all my life and I wanted to give something back to the children. It is nice to be in that position.

"I have visited kids in hospital, some of whom have very little time to live. As a dad it is heartbreaking seeing them in that position.

"It makes me feel proud when I visit those kids. It makes me appreciate what I have in life.

"Something like this keeps my feet firmly on the ground and when my football career is over it will be something for me to continue with."

The white-collar boxing bout will take place at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Lord Street, Southport, on Friday April 6.
