Vote: LFC's best PL midfielders
After the conclusion of the Premier League's 20th season, Liverpoolfc.tv is asking fans to name the players that would make up their dream team of the last two decades.
Today we look at the middle of the park - and we want you to decide who have been our best two central midfielders of the last 20 years.
Steven Gerrard (405 league apps 1998 - )
Quite simply one of the greatest ever players to have represented Liverpool Football Club. The Huyton lad has been influential in every trophy challenge the Reds have made since he broke into the first team as a teenager all those years ago.
Xabi Alonso (143 league apps 2004-09)
The classy Spaniard was brought to Anfield by Rafael Benitez at the start of his tenure and quickly established himself as one of the finest passing midfielders in the game. Alonso was at his brilliant best during our 2008-09 title challenge.
Javier Mascherano (94 league apps 2007-10)
The tigerish midfielder formed a dynamic midfield axis with Xabi Alonso as Liverpool went for the title in 2009. Arguably one of the best ball winners in the division during his time at Anfield.
Momo Sissoko (51 league apps 2005-08)
The rangy midfielder provided Liverpool with an energetic presence in the middle of the park following his transfer from Valencia in July 2005. Sissoko enjoyed an excellent debut season at Anfield, but injuries meant he found first-team chances harder to come by and he joined Juventus in January 2008.
Dietmar Hamann (191 league apps 1999-2006)
The Kaiser was a commanding presence in Liverpool's midfield for several years - and a popular figure on the Kop. There have been few players as adept at shielding a back four as Hamann, whose contribution to the Reds' success during his seven years at the club should not be underestimated.
Danny Murphy (170 league apps 1997-2004)
Danny Murphy established himself as an influential component in Gerard Houllier's teams. Intelligent in possession, the Chester-born midfielder was blessed with an eye for goal - as his three match-winning efforts at Old Trafford testify.
Lucas Leiva (123 league apps 2007 - )
Lucas Leiva is firmly established as a fan favourite at Anfield having initially struggled to hold down a regular first-team berth. The Brazilian's ability to break up play and reading of the game is second to none in the Premier League, and he was voted as the Reds' Player of the Season by fans in 2010-11.
Jamie Redknapp (237 league apps 1991-2001)
Jamie Redknapp was a midfield player with an eye for both a goal and a pass. Injuries restricted his playing time during his latter days at Anfield, but he was still well regarded enough to be named as Liverpool captain by Gerard Houllier.
Gary McAllister (55 league apps 2000-02)
Gary McAllister is one of the most influential signings Liverpool have made in the modern era. Snapped up on a free transfer by Gerard Houllier at the age of 36, Gary Mac proved the doubters wrong in spectacular fashion over the course of his two seasons at Anfield.
John Barnes (314 league apps 1987-1997)
John Barnes is regarded by many to be one of the greatest Liverpool players of all time. Signed as a flying winger in the late 1980s, he remodelled himself as a central midfielder in the latter days of his Liverpool career where he supplied Roy Evans's youthful side with an experienced presence.
Paul Ince (65 league apps 1997-99)
Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince was signed by Roy Evans to add steal to our midfield, and scored a decent tally of 14 goals in 65 league appearances.
