The last time Derby County had won at Anfield, Bill Shankly was Liverpool manager and Alun Evans and Bobby Graham led the line for the Reds. But in October 1997, Billy McEwan's side fancied their chances of a first away win against Liverpool in 27 years.

Liverpool had lost 2-0 at Goodison Park a week previously and Merseyside derby defeat had been compounded by a 3-0 hiding at the hands of Strasbourg in the UEFA Cup days later.

But the Reds were in rampant form when Derby arrived at Anfield. Robbie Fowler fired them ahead on 26 minutes before Oyvind Leonhardsen opened his Anfield account by rounding off a superb length-of-the-field move.

Fowler uncharacteristically squandered a chance to make it three from the penalty spot but soon made amends when Steve McManaman presented him with a simple finish for 3-0. Macca went on to seal victory with a headed goal of his own on 89 minutes.
