Two red cards and nine other yellows preserved the Merseyside derby's reputation as the Premiership's most explosive fixture. Steven Gerrard was given his marching orders after just 18 minutes in front of a stunned Anfield crowd but in his absence, the Reds held firm to make it another season double over the Blues.

As had been the case at Goodison Park earlier in the season (Most Exciting PL Game: 47), the Reds secured victory by striking twice in quick succession to stun their neighbours. This time, the home side scored twice either side of half-time.

First Phil Neville turned a Xabi Alonso cross past his own 'keeper. Then Luis Garcia flicked a delicate lob over Richard Wright two minutes after half-time.

Just like at Goodison, Everton halved the deficit on the hour mark through Tim Cahill; however, Harry Kewell was on hand to make it 3-1 with five minutes remaining.
