Steven Gerrard delivered an outstanding performance as he led England into the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 with a 1-0 win over Ukraine on Tuesday night.

The Liverpool midfielder turned in a man-of-the-match display as the Three Lions set up a last-eight meeting with Italy on Sunday after progressing from Group D as winners.

Skipper Gerrard was joined in Roy Hodgson's starting XI by Anfield clubmate Glen Johnson as England went into the contest knowing a draw against Ukraine would be good enough to see them into the quarter-finals.

And though the co-hosts dominated the first half, Wayne Rooney wasted the best opportunity of the opening 45 when he spurned a close-range header.

The striker made amends, however, moments after the re-start when Gerrard's dangerous right-wing cross caused panic in the Ukraine box and allowed Rooney to nod in the opening goal from a yard out.

The home side responded and there was a moment of real controversy just after the hour mark when John Terry hooked Marko Devic's effort off the line - but TV replays suggested a goal should have been awarded.

Andy Carroll was introduced into the action with nine minutes remaining and England were able to see the game out and secure top spot in the group - and afterwards, Gerrard was awarded the tournament's official Man of the Match accolade for his domineering display.
