Reds raise funds for 'Football Tag'
Liverpool fans showed their support for the Bobby Moore Fund yesterday as 'The Big Football Tag' arrived at Anfield.
The nationwide campaign, which aims to raise awareness about bowel cancer - the disease which claimed England legend Moore in 1993, began on February 12 this year.
Over a period of five days, 'The Big Football Tag' will see signed captain's armbands collected from every league ground in England and Wales.
All 92 English football league clubs will be represented and the event will culminate in a walk from Wembley stadium to Upton Park.
The final stretch of the journey will be led by young Jonjo Heuerman, who has been fundraising for the Bobby Moore Fund for two years and whose idea it was to organise 'The Big Football Tag'.
Back in 2011, the 10-year-old West Ham fan completed a three-day walk from the national stadium to the Hammers' ground in memory of Bobby Moore and his own grandmother, Lynda.
Both sadly passed away after a battle against bowel cancer and in their honour, Jonjo has raised over £91,000 for the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK.
This year, he plans to go one step further with his 'Big Football Tag' idea and yesterday, Merseyside and Liverpool FC took centre stage.
Elizabeth Thompson was the club's representative on the walk. An Anfield season ticket holder and a passionate Reds fan, Elizabeth lost her mother and uncle to bowel cancer, so yesterday's walk was especially poignant.
She collected a captain's armband from an Everton representative at Anfield and walked to Prenton Park, where she passed on a sash of armbands to Tranmere's ambassador.
Afterwards, Elizabeth told Liverpoolfc.com: "The Big Football Tag is a good opportunity to raise awareness and funds for the research of bowel cancer, which is still the second biggest cancer killer.
"I first became aware of Jonjo when Liverpool played West Ham in 2011, and I had instant admiration for the amount of work and money he has raised for the Bobby Moore Fund.
"He is a truly inspirational and unique young man. My mum died of the disease at the age of 42, so I couldn't resist the opportunity to support Jonjo's challenge through my love of LFC when asked.
"I hope Reds fans will also show their support for Jonjo's effort by sponsoring the event."
The walk continued on to Crewe Alexandra this morning and will finish on February 17.
