A new annual bike ride in memory of the 96 Liverpool supporters who lost their lives at Hillsborough will raise money for three charities across the city in 2013.

'Ride for the 96' was created by Ben Williams, who raised almost £5,000 on behalf of the Hillsborough Family Support Group and Hillsborough Justice Campaign last year.

Williams participated in the first edition of the event alone, cycling from Norwich to Anfield via Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield - a total of 269 miles, covered during three days.

For 2013, the ride has been opened to any member of the general public, with an updated 96km route beginning and concluding in St Helens and circling the outskirts of Liverpool.

This year's event will take place on Sunday, April 28 and interested parties can register for the ride - with entrance fees starting at £32 - and make donations via the 'Ride for the 96' website. Registration closes at midnight on Friday, April 26.

All funds generated by donations, fees and sponsorship will be split between a trio of charities helping those in need throughout Liverpool and Merseyside.

Alder Hey Children's Hospital will receive 50 per cent of the total, while Jamie Carragher's 23 Foundation and the Steven Gerrard Foundation will each be given 25 per cent.
