Jordan Henderson has urged his England U21 teammates to pick themselves up after their European U21 Championship campaign kicked off with a 1-0 defeat by Fabio Borini's Italy.

The midfielder played the full 90 minutes in Tel Aviv, as did Jack Robinson, while Borini and Jonjo Shelvey featured for 78 and 75 minutes respectively in the Group A encounter.

"I think we could have kept the ball a bit better," Henderson, the Three Lions captain, said.

"But we have to pick ourselves up now because there are two games to go and we have to be ready for them. There are still positives to find.

"We have to pick ourselves up and fight back. We have two games to win to get out of the group and it doesn't really matter how you do it. We'll be ready."

Confusion reigned during the second half as England had two goals disallowed in strange circumstances.

Henderson added: "We didn't play as well as we could have to be honest. But we're a little bit disappointed our goal wasn't allowed because it could have been a different game.

"I didn't see anything wrong with it and I still don't know why it was disallowed. Everyone was celebrating and it was a good few minutes before we realised."

Henderson and co return to action against Norway on Saturday, June 8 at 5pm BST. Borini will represent Italy against hosts Israel later the same evening.
