Robbie Fowler has hailed the signing of Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet as a 'fantastic deal' for Liverpool.

The custodian put pen to paper on a long-term deal with the Reds on Tuesday and Kop icon Fowler believes it's an acquisition that is perfectly suited for both club and player.

Speaking to Liverpool's Indonesian website on a promotional tour of the country ahead of this summer's pre-season visit, he said: "I think he was a great 'keeper last year. You'd have to look at his nationality as well - the flux of Belgian players in the top leagues and top teams is frightening.

"He performed well last year in the Premier League, made some great saves, and obviously he wants to be the Belgian number one and playing in the Premier League is certainly going to stabilise that.

"I think it's a fantastic deal."
