Jose Enrique believes the current Liverpool squad is the strongest he has worked in since arriving at the club in the summer of 2011.

The Spaniard has been revelling in a promising start to the 2013-14 season - and he believes there's a different feel to the city when results are on the up.

A win against Mauricio Pochettino's Southampton at Anfield would see the Reds remain in pole position after five games in the Barclays Premier League.

And Enrique explained how spirits have been high at Melwood ahead of today's clash.

"What you want to do is be there as long as you can at the top of the table because the feeling is very nice," Enrique told Liverpoolfc.com.

"Also, when you're walking down the street or going out for dinner, you can see there are a lot of people happy.

"When the team is in a good position, Liverpool is another city. The weather is still the same, but the city is a different city. It's very important we try to stay there.

"We have a good squad - I've been here two years and it's the best squad we've had. Hopefully we can stay up there.

"The atmosphere between the players has always been very, very good. We have a good squad with nice people and, of course, good players.

"Of course, when you're winning, the atmosphere in training is different - even with the manager and the staff, but this is normal.

"Our confidence is high because we've been doing very well. Playing at home is an important point, we are playing well and we want to keep that run going."

Enrique knows Southampton will pose a threat when they arrive at Anfield today looking for their second away win of the season.

The Saints were the last side to beat Liverpool when they claimed a 3-1 win over Brendan Rodgers' men at St Mary's in March this year.

Enrique said: "Last year, our mistake was that we lost points in these type of games and there is no excuse when you are playing at home.

"When you are playing away from home, any team in the Premier League can beat you. This game won't be easy, but at home we have to win these games.

"Teams playing against us now, with the way we're playing, are going to try to play a little bit deeper, wait for us and not attack too much when they're playing at Anfield.

"The main thing for us is patience, keeping the ball and with the players we have, we know we're going to create chances."
