It was announced on Monday by the coroner, Lord Justice Goldring, that the fresh inquests into the Hillsborough tragedy of 1989, which claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool fans, will take place in Warrington.

The news follows confirmation earlier this year that a prospective starting date for the new investigations had been set for March 31, 2014, after the original inquest verdicts were quashed in December 2012.

A precise venue has yet to be decided, although a final pre-inquest hearing is scheduled for next Monday, October 7, at which further details and the full scope are likely to be revealed.

Separate investigations by the Independent Police Complaints Commission, into police conduct during the aftermath of the tragedy on April 15, 1989, and Jon Stoddart's Operation Resolve are ongoing.

The IPCC is also currently appealing for witnesses who were at Hillsborough and came forward to give statements, as part of its investigation. Click here for more details.

These inquiries were prompted by the publication of the Hillsborough Independent Panel report in September 2012, which thoroughly exonerated Liverpool fans and exposed the subsequent cover-up.
