Thommo: He was up there with Shanks
Phil Thompson revealed how he always mentions Ronnie Moran in the same breath as his true footballing heroes, including the great Bill Shankly, during an in-depth and poignant interview with LFC TV.
Thommo, who lifted the European Cup as Liverpool captain in May 1981, first crossed paths with Moran as a young apprentice - and he features heavily in our new documentary, 'Bugsy Moran: A Tribute to Liverpool's Sergeant Major'.
He plucked up the courage to ask Moran what the staff at Melwood had seen in a skinny youngster from Kirkby when they brought him to the club, and the response has lived with Thommo to this day.
"We used to watch what you did in and around the dressing room," said Moran. "You were always the best at whatever you wanted to do.
"You made sure that you cleaned the boots best, you put the kit out cleanly and you cleaned the baths better than anybody.
"Whatever we asked you to do, you did it. You were hungry. We could see you had it as a player, but we wanted to see what you were like in terms of temperament."
This fantastic interview is just one of a number of personal recollections we've gathered to mark Moran's 80th birthday today - and if you're an LFC TV Online subscriber, you can watch Thommo's interview in full by clicking play below.
