Liverpool U18s failed to build on an early slender lead as they lost 4-2 to Bolton Wanderers at Lostock Hall Farm on Saturday afternoon.

Neil Critchley's side edged ahead in the encounter when Sheyi Ojo was fouled in the area and the young midfielder stepped up calmly to fire home from the penalty spot.

However, soon after their opener, the young Reds were pegged back at 1-1, before three goals in succession from Bolton put the match beyond a wounded visiting side.

Liverpool managed a consolation goal when Dharius Waldron struck late on in the match; however, Wanderers held out to clinch the victory.

"We struggled to play our football in the conditions, but that's no excuse," Critchley told Liverpoolfc.com. "We didn't play well enough on the day.

"It started off as though the game was going our way when Sheyi put us ahead, but Bolton came back strong and in the end they deserved the three points. All we can do now is pick ourselves up and work hard through the week."
