Roger Hunt hopes Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge can experience the kind of feeling in this World Cup that he enjoyed when England were crowned champions 48 years ago.

The Reds' all-time top goalscorer in league football found the target three times in 1966 as the Three Lions hoisted aloft the trophy for the only occasion in their history on home soil.

Almost five decades on, another Anfield forward is likely to be tasked with firing the goals that bring success for Roy Hodgson's team during the tournament in Brazil.

Hunt has confidence that Sturridge can thrive in a central position at international level following a tremendous, prolific domestic campaign with the club.

"I loved to score goals," he reflected to the Liverpool Echo. "Anywhere, it didn't matter, but to score goals in a World Cup is very special.

"I'm sure Daniel will get that feeling this year. After the terrific season he's had he will be huge for England.

"There will be a lot of pressure on his shoulders but he has had an excellent season playing in what I think is his best position - up front rather than out wide.

"I hope that's how Roy Hodgson is going to use him because he is very sharp going into the World Cup. He scored that great goal before they went so he needs to be our main man."
