Sebastian Coates and Luis Suarez remained on the substitutes' bench as the World Cup brought another shock, with Costa Rica recovering to beat Uruguay 3-1 in Fortaleza.

Diego Godin forced the ball into the net on the quarter-hour mark but was ruled offside, although within 10 minutes the 2010 semi-finalists had earned an advantage.

The referee pointed to the spot after Diego Lugano was hauled to the floor from a set-piece, allowing Edinson Cavani to step up and thrash a penalty into the right corner.

Diego Forlan threatened to extend the lead shortly before the break, but his deflected, looping drive was thwarted by Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Five minutes into the second period, Oscar Duarte should have equalised but instead watched a close-range header palmed away and miskicked a presentable rebound.

But moments later, they had cause to celebrate; a lofted cross from the right flank arrived at Joel Campbell, who immediately smashed an arrow of a strike home for 1-1.

The Uruguayans were stunned further on 58 minutes as Duarte made amends for his earlier miss by expertly directing a header into the opposite side-netting.

And as the South Americans pushed for a leveller, at the other end Campbell turned provider to thread a sublime pass through for Marcos Urena to notch a third.

Next on the schedule for Uruguay in Group D is a mouthwatering meeting with England next Thursday; Costa Rica will meet Italy on the same day.
