Raheem Sterling believes a pause for an international break and the potential return of Daniel Sturridge when domestic action resumes later this month can provide Liverpool with an opportunity to find winning form.

Brendan Rodgers' side suffered a third straight defeat on Saturday when Barclays Premier League leaders Chelsea recovered from an early Emre Can strike to secure a 2-1 scoreline and all three points courtesy of Gary Cahill and Diego Costa efforts.

The result at Anfield followed reversals by a single goal at Real Madrid and Newcastle United during the preceding seven days, with a fortnight to wait now before a chance to put things right at Crystal Palace.

"After a defeat you usually want the next game to come along fast but I think having this break now can help us," Sterling reflected to the Liverpool Echo.

"We need to get going after the international break and start winning games to turn this around. Losing hurts, especially losing a big game at home. Every team goes through sticky patches but I'm sure we'll start climbing the table soon.

"I think there were points in the game when it looked like we would nick a point or even win the game. I thought we played well at times and in patches we produced the kind of football needed to win.

"But Chelsea showed why they are top of the league. When they got chances they were clinical and they defended for their lives. That's something we need to do - we need to be clinical because that helps you to win games.

"I do think we are playing better football and I'm sure we'll soon put together a run of wins. We've got to pick ourselves up, regroup and go again after the international break."

Liverpool will hope to bring back Sturridge for their journey to Selhurst Park on November 23, with the manager reporting at the weekend that the No.15 could be in contention for a comeback.

Sterling welcomed the news, adding of the striker who has not featured in a match since the victory at Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of August: "It will be a massive boost to have Daniel back playing.

"We have missed him and the more quality players you have fit and available, the better. He gives us that threat in the box and he scores goals. We're all really looking forward to having him back in the team."
