Mention the word Arsenal to Neil Mellor and a wide beaming smile will always spread across his face.

Because on November 28, 2004 - after netting 56 goals in a single season for Liverpool's Academy sides - the young striker was given his chance against the Gunners by Rafael Benitez.

He was called upon to lead the Liverpool attack in a crunch meeting with a team many termed the 'invincibles' given that Arsene Wenger's outfit had navigated the previous season without losing a single game.

With the score at Anfield locked at 1-1 and injury time approaching, Mellor seized his chance when he fired an unstoppable drive beyond the reach of Jens Lehmann and into the Kop net from the longest of range.

It was a glorious moment both for Benitez's new-look Liverpool and the player himself. So, how would a young striker celebrate having scored the finest goal of his career to that point? A big night of celebrations, perhaps?

Not for Mellor, for whom an evening on the sofa beckoned as his big moment was about to be played out to millions of viewers watching on television.

"I went home and watched 'Match of the Day' and I remember Gordon Strachan analysing my goal," Mellor told Liverpoolfc.com. "I was a little too tired to go out!

"It was a fantastic moment for me, a real 'Roy of the Rovers' moment and it's something I'll never forget. It's pleasing that so many fans enjoyed it as much as I did.

"I just remember Dietmar Hamann winning a free-kick. Chris Kirkland then took a big kick and Harry Kewell was knocked to one side by Sol Campbell, and the ball landed nicely to me and I hit it well and Lehmann had no chance. I then set off to celebrate with the fans and my teammates, which was an enjoyable moment."

It's a goal that is still talked about to this day and Mellor considers it as an honour to recall the moment with pride, when supporters drop his ferocious strike into conversation.

He added: "It's nice that 10 years on fans still remember it and I can still talk about it.

"Obviously my career is over now but it's always nice when supporters come up to me and tell me where they were that day, whether they were in the stadium or whatever part of the world they were watching the game from."

Another big moment was to arrive in front of the Kop three fixtures later when Mellor stepped up from the bench to score and then provide an assist for Steven Gerrard in the never-to-be-forgotten Champions League clash against Olympiacos.

Despite knee problems putting to an end his playing days in 2012, the striker will always be remembered fondly by Liverpool fans for the contribution he made in those two memorable clashes.

Asked how the goal against Arsenal changed his life, Mellor said: "It showed I could score a goal like that in the first team.

"The disappointing thing was that I didn't go on to fulfil the potential I had because of the injuries that curtailed my Liverpool career, but it's still a good moment that supporters still talk to me about now."
