Lucas Leiva is back in training with Liverpool and will have his match fitness assessed ahead of Sunday's Anfield clash with Manchester United.

The Brazilian has been out of action for the Reds since limping off during the early stages of the Merseyside derby on February 7 due to an adductor issue.

But with Brendan Rodgers' side preparing for an important encounter in the top-four battle, Lucas has been recovering well on the Melwood pitches.

"Lucas Leiva is back, which is great," the manager said at his pre-match press conference. "We'll assess him tomorrow and see where he's at."

Mario Balotelli missed Monday's win at Swansea City with illness but has also returned to training before Louis van Gaal's team travel to L4.

The boss explained: "He was ill and been off for nine days. He has just started to train in the last couple of days, but he is feeling much better.

"One or two other players are returning, so the squad is strong and in good condition."
