Friday saw a 10-strong group of runners embark on a 72-mile journey from Sheffield to Liverpool, in memory of the 96 supporters who lost their lives at Hillsborough.

The participants set off from Hillsborough stadium this morning and will complete their journey on Saturday - before taking part in the inaugural 'Run for the 96 5K' on Sunday.

The run from Sheffield to Liverpool first took place back in 2012 - but this year the route will conclude with a further event in Stanley Park, which is aiming to involve more than 2,000 people.

Those taking part in the extended run from Sheffield, including Steve Kelly, who lost his brother Michael at the disaster on April 15, 1989, met on Thursday night.

This morning they paid their own tribute to the 96 at the memorial situated outside Hillsborough before beginning the 72-mile route back to Merseyside.

The plan is to run 42 miles today, followed by a further 30 miles on Saturday, at which point the participants will have just enough time to get some much-needed rest before Sunday's 'Run for the 96 5K' gets underway.
