Wright on famous World Cup strike
Mark Wright has heralded his match-winning World Cup goal against Egypt as the highlight of his entire career, 25 years on from that famous moment.
On June 21 1990, England were contesting their final group game of that summer's showpiece tournament against the Egyptians - and they desperately needed to win.
Bobby Robson's side had drawn their two opening fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands and three points were a must if they were to progress to the knockout stages.
With the game goalless at half-time, though, it looked like the Three Lions could in fact be heading for an early exit.
But up popped Wright with just under an hour gone in Cagliari to head home Paul Gascoigne's free-kick from the left-hand side and put his country through.
A quarter of a century on, the header that sparked a run to the semi-finals is still fresh in the former Liverpool defender's mind.
"It feels like it was not even five years ago and now you’re telling me it’s 25," he said.
"It shows how time flies. It feels like it was only yesterday I was playing in that World Cup and it was the highlight of my career.
"You’re playing for your country, so you’re regarded as one of the best or the best in that position to play for your country against the best of every other country in the world in a big world stage competition.
"It doesn’t get any better than that - to put your abilities against other countries and play against their national side, it’s an unbelievable feeling.
"To play in the group stages and score, you know, it was fantastic and I can still see it.
"I can still see Gazza, I think it was Des Walker went down injured and Gazza takes the free-kick, and Des is in the way with the physio so he picks the ball up and throws it a little bit further.
"I can still see him doing it. Obviously he whips in a great ball for me to attack and you see the keeper coming and I just threw myself as high as I could and just managed to touch it over him when he’s committed and it goes into an empty net.
"It was a fantastic feeling for me."
