Kolo Toure's decision to extend his stay at Liverpool was ultimately a simple one, insists the defender, and he is now determined to add to his 45 appearances for the club.

The hugely experienced No.4 agreed a new contract with the Reds back in May, two years on from his free transfer to Anfield.

It was an outcome that suited both parties, with Brendan Rodgers retaining the know-how and leadership of a veteran and Toure himself remaining exactly where he wanted to be.

The Ivorian feels 'loved' here - as was proven by his reception at every stage of the pre-season tour of Asia and Australia last month.

But, at the same time, he understands the hard work that must be done in training to get the nod for the manager's starting XI.

Toure told the Liverpool Echo: "Honestly, in the end the decision was really simple. There were other offers but I couldn't leave one of the best clubs in the world.

"For me, to be able to be at Liverpool - playing for this manager and being part of this squad and playing for amazing fans - is massive.

"I really enjoy being here. I feel loved and that's important. I am so lucky to be at a club like this and I want to help this club to get better.

"I know I have a role to play in helping the younger players. I have a lot of experience, but I'm not here just for that.

"I want to play football. And I'll fight and give 100 per cent every single day to show to the manager that I'm able to play. That's what everyone has to do.

"We have two or three players for every position now. If someone is not fit then we've got someone ready to come in and play. You need that competition."
