On the 11th anniversary of Liverpool's double swoop for Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia, we pay a special tribute to a pair of Spaniards who helped to make history during their time at Anfield.

It was all change for the Reds in the summer of 2004 following the appointment of Rafael Benitez as manager, as he set about stamping his own style on the team.

An important part of that was the recruitment of Alonso, a central midfielder blessed with an unrivalled passing range, and Garcia, a creative and versatile forward with an eye for the spectacular.

Upon their arrival on Merseyside, few would possibly have predicted that nine months later both would be hoisting aloft the European Cup having contributed to the tournament’s most dramatic final.

Long-term, meanwhile, both men would become Kop favourites, forging a relationship with the fans that goes beyond football and remains to this day.
