Joe Gomez insists the Liverpool squad need no reminder of the standards expected of them by everyone connected to the club.

The Reds lock horns with arch-rivals Manchester United this evening as the Barclays Premier League returns following an international break.

Their journey to Old Trafford offers a delayed opportunity to recover from the shock of a 3-0 loss against West Ham United at Anfield two weeks ago.

Gomez has been away with his country during the past fortnight, representing England at U21 level after his eye-catching club form earned a call-up.

But the defender’s focus is now firmly back on domestic demands – a sentiment shared by the entire group – and restoring the team’s level at United.

“The standard is exceptionally high,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“You don’t need to be reminded because you know all the time the expectations from everyone around the club – the coaching staff, ourselves, our teammates and the supporters.

“You know when it’s not good enough and the result [against West Ham] was definitely disappointing but we’ve got to move on and try to get a positive one on Saturday.”

The unexpected defeat by the Hammers ended a run of three consecutive clean sheets for a Liverpool backline that has featured Gomez on the left.

Necessary analysis took place in the aftermath but now he believes it’s crucial that the Reds move on and carry lessons learned into the clash with United.

“Obviously it was a bit of a dip in the performance and the result, considering how we started [the season],” continued the No.12.

“But now it’s just a case of moving forward. We analysed it but I think everyone has already switched and put their focus towards the game against Manchester United.

“We have to take the things we need to work on out of the game – individually and the team – and try to correct that for the next game. But everyone has moved on and is excited for Manchester United.”
