Hard to believe it may be but exactly 11 years have now passed since Steven Gerrard scored one of his most famous Liverpool goals – a screamer against Olympiacos in the Champions League at Anfield.

On a night of genuine drama under the floodlights on December 8, 2004, the Reds required a win by at least a two-goal margin over the Greek outfit to secure progress to the competition’s knockout stages.

Their task had grown when Rivaldo put the visitors in front with a free-kick before the break, though substitutes Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Neil Mellor hauled Rafael Benitez’s team back into contention.

But another moment of magic was needed, and Gerrard provided it, bounding onto a Mellor knockdown and launching an unstoppable drive into the right corner to make the Kop erupt and send Liverpool through.
