April 1 in LFC history: Cup success and Fowler jumps ahead of the King
Take a look at some of the key events and highlights from this date in Liverpool FC's illustrious history as we delve into our archives…
Birthday...
Former Liverpool striker David Ngog celebrates his 27th birthday today. The Frenchman - who now plays for Stade de Reims - joined the club in July 2008 and went on to score 19 goals in 94 appearances during his three years with the Reds.
Reds lift League Cup...
In 1981, Liverpool won the League Cup for the first time in their history by beating West Ham United 2-1 in a final replay at Villa Park.
After a 1-1 draw at Wembley, Bob Paisley's side responded brilliantly to Paul Goddard's fifth-minute opener in the return fixture.
Kenny Dalglish's equaliser was followed by Alan Hansen's winning goal three minutes later.
Captain Phil Thompson hoisted the trophy but later admitted to leaving it behind on the journey back to Merseyside.
He recalled: “On our way back from Villa Park the cup was being handed around the coach and all talk was about where we would celebrate. Suffice to say a good night was had by all!
“The next morning I received a call from Peter Robinson, our chief executive, who asked where the trophy was. I told him it was on the bus.
“‘Yes, I know,’ he replied. ‘I’ve just had a call from the depot in St Helens - the driver found it on the back seat when he was cleaning up!’”
Heskey off the mark...
Emile Heskey scored his first Liverpool goal on this day away to Coventry City back in 2000.
The No.8 opened his account for the club at Highfield Road in the 78th minute by bagging the final goal of the Reds' 3-0 win.
Heskey found the back of the net with a header from a Patrik Berger free-kick and was subsequently mobbed by his teammates in the celebrations.
Fowler overtakes Kenny...
On this day in 2006, Robbie Fowler overtook Kenny Dalglish in the club's all-time goalscoring list.
Fowler scored his 173rd Liverpool goal at The Hawthorns to help Rafa Benitez's side record a 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion.
The striker, in his second spell at Anfield, said: "To get anywhere near Kenny is an achievement which I am greatly proud of.
"I thought the chance had passed me by."
The Scouser moved to fifth in the standings but he was leapfrogged by Steven Gerrard in 2015.
