Ahead of his first Merseyside derby as Reds manager, Jürgen Klopp has explained why he believes Liverpool's rivalry with Everton is unique and part of what makes the city 'special'.

Writing in his official programme notes for tonight’s game, he said: “This will be my first experience of a Merseyside derby and I have to say I am very much looking forward to it.

“I have heard a lot of stories about the unique nature of this rivalry and how it is very different to many other local rivalries. I know the intensity is big and the passion on both sides is immense.

“Of course, I have been involved in games of this nature many times, both as a manager and a player. But I think before you can truly appreciate what the occasion means you have to have your own experiences and collect your own information.

“It is maybe appropriate, for my own understanding of the unique nature of this rivalry, that this game comes so soon after the Hillsborough memorial service, which we attended last week.

“To see so many Everton supporters in the Kop, as well as Everton scarves and Everton strips among the tributes, was very moving. And of course Everton were well represented by their manager, former players and current senior officials at the service.

“This shows how special this city is and that the football rivalry is a big part of its special culture.”
