We head back to 1965 and the night Liverpool claimed a major European scalp with the famous Kop playing their role as 12th man to devastating effect.

The famous terrace was packed 90 minutes prior to kick off, as the recently-won FA Cup was paraded around the pitch before kick-off.

The celebrations prior to the match had barely subsided when Roger Hunt gave the Reds the lead inside five minutes.

That goal sparked the Italians into life and they equalised moments later through Alessandro Mazzola, after a missed tackle by Ron Yeats.

But Bill Shankly’s side showed fighting spirit, and a touch of class, to retake their lead, with a well-worked free-kick allowing Ian Callaghan to slot past the Inter ‘keeper.

The hosts secured a vital goal 15 minutes from time as Hunt saw his shot parried only for it to fall to Ian St John for a tap-in.

Although Liverpool went on to lose the tie after a controversial second-leg defeat, this game still goes down as one of the trademark European nights at Anfield.
