Terry McDermott scored our opening goal in the 1977 European Cup final against Borussia Moenchengladbach. The Kirkby midfield maestro, who made 392 appearances in a red shirt, netting a very creditable 81 goals, gives his thoughts on the big game ahead.

“I want to pass on my best wishes to Jürgen Klopp and the team. We can do it! I wish I was in their shoes and able to play again. I’m really looking forward to this final.

“We haven’t won a trophy for four years since Kenny Dalglish won us the League Cup, so it’s about time we did again.

“If we play some of the football we have been producing under Klopp then I think we have got a great chance of lifting this trophy.

“We have faced some incredibly tough games on this run to the final. We knocked Manchester United out of Europe, which was great; we beat Borussia Dortmund on an incredible night and then beat Villarreal in the semi-finals on another unbelievable night in front of the Kop.

“I missed the Dortmund game because I was away in Spain so I watched it in a bar alongside some Liverpool fans, and I was jumping up and down like crazy! It was great!

"I was at Anfield for the Villarreal game and I’ve never heard noise like that for a good few years. It was just fantastic.

“With that fabulous crowd behind us cheering us on in Basel there is no doubt in my mind that we can win.”
