It was Bill Shankly who brought St John to Liverpool. He captured the Scottish forward from Motherwell on May 2 1961 for a fee of £37,500.

St John would prove to be one of the most significant signings in the club’s history as he went on to play a pivotal role in turning the Reds into one of the most feared sides in Europe.

‘The Saint’ would go on to make 425 appearances in a red shirt, netting 118 goals.
