Because of a collapsed sewer under the Kop, many supporters were yet to witness the new-look team of 1987-88.

With the first three games away from home, only members of the travelling Kop had seen just how good a player Barnes was.

Oxford United were the opposition for the first home game on September 12, 1987, as a capacity crowd of 42,666 packed into Anfield. They wouldn’t be disappointed.

Just 13 minutes into the contest, a wonderful run and cross from Barnes ended with John Aldridge netting his first goal in front of the Kop.

Barnes himself then delighted the home supporters with a sensational free-kick on 37 minutes. No television cameras were there to witness it but those who were remember this display from Barnes.
