Kenny Dalglish’s Liverpool went top of the league after a Barnes-inspired display saw previous table-toppers QPR sunk without trace at Anfield.

With Ian Rush given a weekend off to watch his old side from the directors' box the Welshman would witness an unstoppable display from Barnes.

He created the opening goal for Craig Johnston before his cross resulted in a penalty, which John Aldridge duly converted.

Barnes then made it 3-0 after a delightful one-two before setting the seal on the victory with a sensational individual effort.

Describing the goal, Dalglish said: “It was a magnificent piece of football from Barnesie. He made a great run from the halfway line, past a string of Rangers men, before smashing his second goal of the match into the Kop net.”
